Pickleball has been played off and on in the basin by a few PE Teachers in the schools and a few individuals who
learned the game outside of the Basin.
In 2015, some local players decided to teach other retirees and it began to take off as Pickleball has across the
USA and world today. In 2017, Klamath Basin Pickleball Association(KBPA) formed with 60 members and wanted to promote the "Game for Everyone" throughout the community.
With Steen Sports Park being in the middle of the Klamath Basin and a park already thriving with multiple
activities, we approached Dave Steen and the Steen Sports Park Board Members to include pickleball in the park. They loved and welcomed the idea.
A relationship was formed between Steen Sports Park and KBPA to build a six court complex at the park the summer of
2017, fundraising was done by KBPA and by summer of 2018 enough funds from donations, fundraisers and a matching grant from Oregon Parks & Recreation were enough to build.
September 12, 2019, the asphalt and court surfacing are complete and the courts are playable. Permanent
perimeter and interior fencing is part of the original plan and budget. It will be completed as soon as possible. In the meantime, Superior Fence has generously donated a temporary fence
so the community can start playing pickleball.
The venue is a beautiful addition to the park.
The KBPA members will be playing at Steen Sports Park every morning during the week and Saturdays. On
these beautiful fall days, you will find some folks in the evenings too. It is time for EVERYONE to learn and see what the game of pickleball is. Once you try it, you will love
Over the winter, KBPA will work with Steen Sports Park to get a couple of tournaments on the schedule, some
certified instructor training, and club member play schedules on the calendar.
The KBPA Members provide pickleball instruction the 2nd Saturday of each month at Sacred Heart gym starting at 9 am and by 11 am you will know how to play.
